Your first visit

What to expect at your first appointment

Coming to an osteopath for the first time? Here's exactly what happens so you know what to expect — no surprises.

Your pre-appointment checklist

A few simple things that will help you get the most from your first visit.

👕

What to wear

Comfortable, loose clothing you can move in. You may be asked to remove outer layers so Neil can assess your posture and movement properly.

📋

What to bring

Any relevant scans, X-rays or medical letters if you have them. Your insurance card or details if you plan to claim reimbursement.

💊

Medications

Make a note of any medications you take regularly — including painkillers, blood thinners, or anti-inflammatories. This helps Neil tailor treatment safely.

🕐

Timing

Arrive 5 minutes early for your first appointment. The full session is 45 minutes. Try not to have a heavy meal immediately beforehand.

📝

Your history

Think about when the problem started, what makes it better or worse, and whether anything triggered it. The more detail you can give, the better.

Questions

Write down anything you want to ask. Neil always leaves time to explain his findings, the treatment plan, and what to expect afterwards.

1

We start with a conversation

Your first appointment begins with a detailed consultation — usually around 10–15 minutes. Neil will ask about your main complaint, how long you've had it, what makes it better or worse, and your general health history.

There are no wrong answers. The more context you can give, the better. Feel free to mention anything that seems relevant, even if you're not sure it's connected.

2

A physical assessment

Neil will assess your posture, range of movement, and the specific area of concern. He may ask you to move in certain ways — bending, turning, lifting your arms — to understand what's happening in your body.

You may be asked to remove some outer clothing so Neil can assess the area properly. He'll always explain what he's doing and why.

3

Treatment

Once Neil has a clear picture, treatment begins. Osteopathic techniques include soft tissue massage, joint mobilisation, and sometimes a gentle manipulation (the "click" you may have heard about). Neil will always explain what he's about to do and check you're comfortable.

Treatment is generally not painful, though you may feel some tenderness in areas that are already sore.

4

Advice and next steps

At the end of the session Neil will explain what he found, what he treated, and what he recommends going forward. This might include exercises, posture advice, or a follow-up appointment.

Most patients need between 3 and 6 sessions depending on the condition. Some acute problems resolve in 1–2. Neil will give you an honest estimate.

A note for nervous first-timers: Many patients are a little apprehensive before their first osteopathy appointment. That's completely normal. Neil takes a gentle, explanatory approach — you're always in control and can ask him to stop or slow down at any point.

Practical things to know

How long is the appointment? First appointments are 45 minutes. Follow-up appointments are also 45 minutes.

What should I wear? Comfortable, loose clothing is ideal. You may need to remove outer layers so the affected area can be assessed.

How much does it cost? €70 per session, payable by card or cash. Your Belgian mutuelle may reimburse part of this.

Do I need a referral? No. You can book directly online without a GP referral.

Will I be sore afterwards? Some patients feel mild achiness for 24–48 hours after their first treatment, similar to post-exercise soreness. This is normal and settles quickly.
